Is more better? Is bigger better? When you talk to some business leaders they will say yes. But I’ve seen many a business that realized that was not the case for them.

Recently I was having a conversation with an association executive who was struggling with decreasing membership. I asked him why he needed to increase membership. Are the current members being offered value? Are they providing value? Are their needs being met? To me the real value is the existing membership and what they give and get from one another.

I suggested that 100 members who just pay dues is nice but 50 involved members who are helping one another grow, be better, etc. might be where the efforts need to be prioritized. And if it’s a dollars thing………………show me the value and I’ll gladly pay you more.

I could see he was processing the conversation.

And then this morning this happened which reminded me of that conversation…………………..

This is how I start my day several times a week. A sunrise bike ride.

Watching the sun come up this morning I was chatting with a young man why more people don’t get up to experience and witness this. And then he says to me……..

Maybe that wouldn’t be such a good thing.

We both laughed. And a reminder that more and bigger is not always better. In life. In business.
