Give your customers the unexpected. Give your employees the unexpected. That’s how we make wow and memorable moments. That’s how you get people talking about you. That’s how you retain people – whether they be customers or employees. When I attend meetings and conferences or I am working with clients we hear this theme over and over.

So on my recent vacation, there I am leaning against the railing, watching the cruise ship elevators go up and down. And then I see it……………………….

Yes, that’s a piano and its player in the elevator! Taking up almost the whole elevator mind you! How could you not smile? Unless of course you were someone racing to your next buffet experience and the elevator was full!

I caught up with Piano Man later during the cruise. In some hallway that is barely used near the art gallery. We chatted for a few moments. He had a “shtick.” If you don’t know what a shtick is, Google it. But his shtick was he was a stowaway hiding (with his piano) from the captain. Yes, that was his shtick But his job/shtick was this……………………………..

To create memories for vacationers by showing up in the most unexpected of places with his piano. Hallways, elevators, crevices. I’d say he did a good job!

So how about you………………………………how does this get you thinking about how to give your customers, and even your employees, the unexpected? Where can a fun shtick play its role?
